Winter in Northern Colorado means that the ice has formed on lakes, ponds, and other bodies of water. Just because the temperatures can be down right frigid, doesn't mean that the ice is always safe to be on.

Just ask one dog that had to be rescued by Poudre Fire Authority Thursday afternoon. A dog named Tikka was at the Riverbend Ponds Natural Area near Prospect Road in Fort Collins when the pup fell through the ice into the freezing water below.

The owner of the dog didn't go in after the dog, instead, they called 911. This is the correct action to do if this ever happens, by the way. A firefighter from Poudre Fire Authority trained in on-ice rescues responded to the scene in an attempt to save the dog from the frigid waters.

The firefighter, equipped with a special dry suit was able to reach the dog, who swam across the pond but could not get up onto the ice shelf on the pond. The rescue firefighter was able to lift Tikka to safety.

Once the dog was out of the freezing water, the four-year-old mixed breed was put inside of a UC Health ambulance to warm up. Moments after the rescue, the poor pup was able to be reunited with her owners and the brave firefighting rescuer could also warm up.

Poudre Fire Authority provided photos and the story via Facebook. See the photos below.

This is the second dog that has had to be rescued from an icy lake in the Fort Collins area by Poudre Fire Authority since the beginning of 2025. The first dog was rescued by Poudre Fire Authority Station two from Sheldon Lake at City Park on January 5.
