Main Street in downtown Grand Junction will soon be home to a ship-themed playground feature and climbable structure, turf play areas, oversized games, and a setting that draws kids and families to one of the busiest intersections downtown. City leaders say this is part of their plan to activate underused space and increase engagement along Main Street. However, residents who remember how crowded the area used to get when children would play in the old fountain are wondering if it’s the best idea.
Why the Old Fountain Had to Go
The old fountain at 5th and Main had been out of service for years, offering downtown visitors little reason to stop or gather. Instead of repairing the feature, Grand Junction officials chose to remove it altogether and rethink how the space could be of better use for today’s visitors. The goal was to replace something forgotten with something functional.

Grand Junction is confident the new play area will boost foot traffic, offer support to nearby businesses, and welcome more families to the downtown area. The play area is expected to open in May of 2026, meaning we won’t have to wait very long to see how it changes the feel of 5th and Main. Please be extra careful as you drive this portion of Main Street, watching for pedestrians and children making their way to the play area, which will be located next to the intersection.
